Buildings insurance
Why buildings insurance?
A fire, a burst pipe or a severe storm – and repairing or even rebuilding your house quickly becomes very expensive. Buildings insurance pays for the building itself: walls, roof, windows and permanently fitted parts such as heating and plumbing. Anyone financing a house needs it anyway – banks usually require at least fire cover.
Ideal for
- Homeowners
- Home buyers & builders
- Landlords

Fire
Pays after fire, lightning and explosion – right up to rebuilding your house.
Escape of water
Burst pipes, frost damage to pipes and water escaping from them – one of the most common types of damage to houses.
Storm & hail
Pays when a storm of force 8 or above or hail damages the roof, facade or windows.
Good to know
- Flooding, heavy rain and sewage backflow (natural hazards) are only covered with an add-on – consumer advocates advise checking it.
- When you buy a house, the existing insurance passes to you. You can cancel it within one month of being entered in the land register.
- If a bank is entered in the land register, it usually has to agree to a change of insurer.

Questions about buildings insurance
Is buildings insurance compulsory?
Not by law. But if you finance a house, you usually have to prove it to the bank – at least for fire. And because major damage quickly exceeds your own savings, it’s almost indispensable for homeowners.
What’s the difference from home contents insurance?
Buildings insurance pays for the building itself – walls, roof and everything permanently attached to the house. Home contents insurance pays for your belongings, i.e. furniture, clothes and technology. As an owner who lives in the house, you therefore usually need both.
Do I need natural-hazard cover?
Heavy rain can occur anywhere, not just near rivers – many homeowners underestimate this risk. The experts check whether and on what terms the add-on is available for your house.
Do I have to upload my policy?
No, that's optional. With your policy, though, our partner's experts can compare your current cover more precisely and make you a suitable offer faster.
What does reviewing my contracts cost?
Nothing – 100 % free and with no hidden commitment. The check is non-binding. We are paid by the provider or the licensed experts when a new contract is concluded. When you switch electricity or gas, we pass part of this on to you as a bonus; for insurance there is no bonus and no cashback (§ 48b VAG). If you grant the voluntary support mandate, the licensed insurance experts also receive an ongoing commission from the insurers for looking after your contracts (portfolio commission) – this costs you nothing either.
