Your rights with an internet contract
Many internet contracts simply carry on after the minimum term. A comparison shows you whether you can get more performance or a lower price at your address. The Telecommunications Act (TKG) protects you – good to know before you switch. General information, not legal advice.

24 months at most
The initial term is limited to 24 months. After that you can cancel at any time with one month's notice (§ 56 TKG).
Moving house
If your provider can't supply your new home, you may cancel with one month's notice (§ 60 TKG).
Too slow?
If the difference is significant, you may pay less or cancel (§ 57 TKG) – proven with the broadband measurement tool of the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur).

Questions about switching internet
How long am I tied to an internet contract?
The initial term may be no longer than 24 months. After that you can cancel at any time with one month's notice (§ 56 TKG). Providers must also offer a contract with a term of no more than 12 months.
Will I be offline during the switch?
Hardly: when you switch provider, your connection may be interrupted for one working day at most (§ 59 TKG). You can keep your phone number. It's best to cancel the old contract only once the new connection is confirmed – we'll help you with that.
What happens when I move?
If your provider can supply your new home, the contract moves with you. If it can't, you may cancel with one month's notice (§ 60 TKG). Simply choose “Moving” in the form – we'll check what is available at your new address.
My internet is much slower than agreed – what can I do?
If the speed is significantly lower, you may pay less or terminate the contract early (§ 57 TKG). You prove this with the free broadband measurement tool of the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur): 30 measurements on three different days, via LAN cable directly at the router.
