What many people don't know

A stethoscope, tablets and dressing material on a white surface
  • Getting back into cover is your right

Health insurance has been compulsory since 2009. Statutory funds usually re-admit former members, and private insurers must offer at least the basic tariff (Basistarif).

  • Arrears can often be reduced

Statutory funds should reasonably reduce back-payments in the case of late registration. With private insurers, deferral with payment in instalments is possible.

  • Even with treatment or a treatment plan

Ongoing treatment or a treatment and cost plan is no reason not to try. What matters is that the experts know about it.

Questions about health insurance

I haven't had health insurance for a long time – will anyone take me at all?

Yes. In Germany, health insurance has been compulsory since 2009. If you were last insured with the statutory scheme, you usually return to a statutory health insurance fund. If you were last privately insured, a private insurer must accept you at least in the basic tariff (Basistarif). Which route applies to you is something the experts clarify with you.

Do I have to pay all contributions for the time without insurance?

Contributions or a surcharge are usually due for the gap. Statutory health insurance funds should reduce back-payments appropriately in the case of late registration and waive late-payment surcharges (§ 256a SGB V). With private insurers a premium surcharge applies, which can be deferred and paid in instalments (§ 193(4) VVG). The sooner you get in touch, the smaller the gap.

What if treatment is ongoing or there's a treatment plan?

Simply state it in the form – we don't need any diagnoses. The experts take your situation into account when looking for a solution, for example from when which benefits are covered. If you'd rather talk about it on the phone, choose “Prefer to discuss in person”.
